The Global Enterprise Challenge 2009 !!! Team Indonesia Won !!

22-24 June 2009, that was the most unforgettable days of my life !!
I was chosen with my 5 other friends to represent Indonesia in the Global Enterprise Challenge.
What is the Global Enterprise Challenge?

The Global Enterprise Challenge, formerly known as the Enterprise Olympics, arose as a result of an international collaboration between Ken Baker, then Chief Executive of the Enterprise New Zealand Trust, and Gordon McVie, who was at that time with Scottish Enterprise. This challenge is a high-powered student business competition, involving internet technology and global competitors, and in 2008 was hosted by Australia courtesy of Norman Owens, founding Chair of Australian Business Week.

GEC is entrepreneurial innovation and competition among groups of young people aged 16-19 years, using technology and the Internet to reach regional and global scale. Teams from all over the world must answer the challenge or problems that is provided by NASA and broadcasted via the internet from Glasgow, Scotland. Challenges given to the participants requiring the teams to designs a prototype and business plan / marketing for a product that can be marketed commercially, in order to reach a goal. All of the concepts, prototype designs, business plans, and the recorded presentation (maximum duration of only 3 minutes) must be completed within a very limited time, namely in the 24 hours after challenges received by the teams. Generally, the goal is associated with a social objective or problem related to the environment.

Before we were chosen for the GEC 2009, a national selection was held, which was called ASEC, it involves Indonesia, Singapore and Philippines. At first we were separated into groups of eight, with six members each group. We came from different schools and backrounds, so we also learned how to build a relationship, and how to build a solid teamwork.

After we, the Spoon Corporated won the Asean Science Enterprise Challenge, we automaticly will participate in the Global Enterprise Challenge 2009. Honestly, we didn't think we would have won the ASEC 2009, we just did our best, solid teamwork and pray.

After ASEC 2009, off we go to the GEC 2009 !! Spoon Corporated that consists of six students which are, myself, Asyraf Firas Abdurrasyid (SMAN 1 Bandung), Lita Gunawan (SMAK YAHYA Bandung), Wismaya Adi Purnama (SMA Taruna Nusantara Magelang), Rizky Satrio Nugroho (SMA Madania Bogor), Christa Yona Twedrian (SMA Regina Pacis Bogor), and Evelyn Antoinette (Bina Bangsa School Jakarta).

The home of GEC 2009 was in Scotland, but, Team Indonesia and Team Singapore gathered in Jakarta at Atlet Century Hotel, and also we are going to use the internet technology to interact with the other participants and judges that's spread all over the world. After going through various brainstorming games and mini-challenges, the challenge was GIVEN !!

The challenge was given by NASA, and it was how "to produce a working model of an innovative product or service that will reduce food waste in your country and help to alleviate starvation in one of the world’s poorest countries.

Firstly, each members gave their ideas and solution to the given challenge. Finally, after discussing, we agreed to make a food mangement system that can recycle food waste. This is how the system works:

1. Food wastes are seperated into 2, the protein and non-protein 2. Protein food waste, are put into a high pressure tank to kill the microbes 3. Then, the foods are put into an oven to be dried 4. After the foods are dried, it is put into a grinder, and grinded until powder 5. There we have, a very high-protein farm animal food

And the non-protein food waste, will be made into an organic fertilizers.

Then, we also decided to reduce the food waste, we need to have the awareness of people. We made a campaign in a form of dining set. So, what I thought was, why don't we make a campaign with plates, bowls, spoons, forks, etc, written with slogans and pictures, that will raise the awareness of the people, such as, 'foods are meant to be eaten' , 'thank you for finishing your food' , etc. And that was agreed by the rest of the group.

In conclusion, our system which is called the 'Food-o-cycle' , is divided into 2 systems: Our main project is to reduce food waste, with the campaign system in a form of dining set. Then to ssupport this, we also made a food recycling system that can manage the food waste. So, not only we can reduce the food waste, we can also manage it.

Then, we also made the 2 paged Business Plan, Powerpoint, and prepared to record the 3 minutes presentation.

The 24 hour time limit passed, and we recorded our presentation, and sent it to Scotland. All to do then, was just wait for the winner announcement.

The announcement was announced by Sarah Magnus from NASA, by video streaming. But somehow, it didn't connect too well in Indonesia. But suddenly, someone from Team Singapore got a telephone call, and said "The winners are INDONESIA and Korea!" At first, we didn't believe it, we thought that was a joke or a prank, but then we saw the announcement on the Global Enterprise 2009 site, and INDONESIA is the winner of GEC 2009 !!!!!

We were speechless, we didn't know what to say, it was just like a dream come true!!

to be continued???
